In everything, give thanks

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” It’s challenging to be grateful when you feel like you are surrounded by doom. “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair” When we are giving thanks in the midst of difficulties, it isn’t to invalidate what we are going through. In fact it’s quite the opposite. You can acknowledge the seriousness of the struggles you are facing and yet be thankful that God is good despite those real struggles.

It’s ok to not want to be thankful. I understand. Some of the challenges that life throws are just entirely horrible. There is a strength in your weakest moments and that is, God.  “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” It is possible to rejoice right now without deluding yourself. It is possible to have completely truth based, real joy despite what it is you face.

The wonderful thing about truth is, it never changes, no matter what happens. That’s where we find the things to be grateful for. When you are saying thank you, you are declaring that you believe! That is your strength. Faith. Giving thanks stirs up your faith- faith is what keeps your heart alive. So find something to be grateful for.

Maybe it isn’t external things. Dig deeper when finding what you’re thankful for. Saying thank you will feel like a chore if it isn’t coming from your heart and if you are saying thank you to God for the things you think you should be grateful for instead of what you are actually thankful for. Maybe you’re not exactly thankful for the cereal you ate this morning, thats fine. You can probably think of something more meaningful that will help you to remember that God is with you and He is good to you.

“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds”
