so much more than skin
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” Do you know how beautiful you are? No. Not how conventionally attractive you are but how beautiful. Beautiful is a word I call Jesus and yet I have never seen Him with my eyes. Seeing isn’t the same as knowing. When you have known someones heart and soul, they radiate a beauty that no measure of outer beauty can compare to. Love is what gives us the eyes to see true beauty.
You are not eyes. You are the soul behind your eyes. You aren't your head, you are the memories and thoughts and ideas within that mind. You are not your body, your body is serving you every day to keep you, the soul, alive. You can look in the mirror, but you wont see your reflection. You are only going to see yourself when you stop focusing on what you look like and start knowing who it is within that body. You are alive. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You have so much to offer.
When I’m running myself into the ground trying to keep up with the beauty regimes that are apparently going to make or break me, that’s when I look at Jesus. When I look at Him, I realise… I am loved. As I am. All the fuss the world is filling my mind with melts away. I realise, I haven’t lost myself. Thank God for that. It’s all lies. You don’t need anything. You are complete.
“If you drink from Jacob’s well, you’ll be thirsty again, but if anyone drinks the living water I give them, they will never be thirsty again.”
Outer beauty can be a gift from God but you will destroy yourself by making it your focus. Your focus should never be anything but love for that is what God has commanded us to do. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting”
I pray in Jesus’ name that whatever insecurities and doubts are causing you grief would be silenced by the love of the Father. I pray that you would realise where your beauty lies and that you would no longer be enslaved to the impossible task of trying to find worth in your outer beauty. You are worth so much more.
